Plain definitions of the hardbanding, hardfacing and drill string terms used across the field notes on this site.

30 terms defined
Abrasive hardband
A hardbanding alloy engineered to maximize tool joint wear resistance, typically containing hard carbides. It extends drill pipe life but aggressively wears casing during contact. Related article →
Acceptance criteria
The documented standards a hardbanding deposit must meet before pipe returns to service, covering crack limits, porosity, hardness, geometry, and coverage continuity. Related article →
Casing wear
Progressive metal loss on the inner wall of oilfield casing caused by rotating drill pipe tool joints, exacerbated by hard or poorly applied hardbanding. Related article →
Casing-friendly hardband
A hardbanding alloy formulated to protect drill pipe tool joints while minimizing casing damage, using metallurgy that resists abrasion without cutting into casing steel. Related article →
Chromium carbide hardband
A hardfacing alloy with chromium-rich carbides in a iron-based matrix, offering good abrasion resistance at lower cost and generally more casing-friendly behavior than tungsten carbide. Related article →
Cooling rate
The speed at which a hardbanding deposit and heat-affected zone cool after welding. Controlled cooling prevents cracking, hardening, and residual stress in tool joint steel. Related article →
Crack-free alloy
A hardbanding alloy depositable without check or cross-check cracks, using crack-tolerant metallurgy rather than relying on controlled crack patterns for stress relief. Related article →
Directional drilling
Drilling techniques that steer the wellbore along a planned trajectory, increasing side loading between drill pipe and casing and raising the importance of hardband selection. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Downtime cost
The total financial impact of drilling interruptions caused by equipment wear or failure. Avoiding tool joint and casing failures through hardbanding offsets rig day-rate expenses. Related article →
Drill pipe
The tubular steel string that transmits drilling fluid and rotation from surface to the bit. Its tool joints carry the threaded connections and receive hardbanding protection. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
GMAW
Gas metal arc welding, the most common process for applying hardbanding to tool joints, depositing cored or solid wire with shielding gas at high travel speed. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Hardbanding
The application of wear-resistant weld deposits onto drill pipe tool joints and other oilfield components to extend service life and reduce downhole metal loss. Related article →
Hardfacing
The broader practice of depositing hard, wear-resistant alloy onto a metal surface by welding. Hardbanding is the oilfield-specific application of hardfacing to drilling assemblies. Related article →
Hardness testing
Measurement of deposit resistance to indentation, commonly by Rockwell or HRC methods, used to verify that hardbanding meets specified wear-protection levels. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Heat-affected zone
The region of base metal adjacent to a weld whose microstructure and properties are altered by welding heat. Excessive heat input in hardbanding can soften or crack this zone. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Interpass temperature
The temperature of the weld area between passes, maintained between a specified minimum and maximum to prevent cracking and ensure consistent hardbanding deposit properties. Related article →
Magnetic particle inspection
A non-destructive test that reveals surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic steel by applying magnetic fields and iron particles. Used to screen tool joints after hardbanding. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Non-magnetic drill collar
A drill collar made from austenitic or other non-ferromagnetic alloy so downhole survey tools can read the earth's magnetic field without interference. It requires special hardbanding practices. Related article →
Non-magnetic hardbanding
Hardbanding alloys and procedures that avoid magnetizing non-magnetic drill collars, which would interfere with measurement-while-drilling and directional survey instruments. Related article →
Oilfield fabrication
The shop processes supporting hardbanding work, including pipe handling, rotation equipment, welding stations, and quality systems specific to oilfield tubular components. Related article →
Pin and box
The male (pin) and female (box) threaded tool joint ends of drill pipe. Hardbanding is applied to the box and pin shoulders and exterior surfaces that contact casing. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Portable hardbanding machine
A field-deployable welding lathe or positioner that clamps and rotates pipe at the wellsite or pipe yard, enabling hardbanding without transporting pipe to a shop. Related article →
Preheat
Heating the tool joint to a specified temperature before welding to reduce cooling rates, drive off moisture, and prevent cracking in both the hardband deposit and base steel. Related article →
QA checklist
A structured verification list confirming every quality requirement is met before hardbanded pipe ships, covering procedure records, inspection results, marking, and documentation. Related article →
Re-application
Applying new hardbanding over an existing deposit, requiring evaluation, possible removal, and surface preparation to ensure fusion and avoid defects at the interface. Related article →
Shop hardbanding machine
Fixed welding lathe equipment in a fabrication shop offering precise rotation, preheat control, and controlled environment for consistent, high-volume hardbanding. Related article →
Tool joint
The thicker, threaded connection welded to each drill pipe end. Tool joints carry torque and sealing loads and are the primary location for hardbanding deposits. Related article →
Tungsten carbide hardband
Hardbanding containing tungsten carbide particles in a weld matrix, delivering extreme abrasion resistance for drilling conditions where casing contact is minimal or acceptable. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Visual inspection
The first-line examination of hardbanding for cracks, porosity, undercut, spatter, and geometry, performed before instrumented testing and documented against acceptance criteria. Related article → Wikipedia ↗
Welding procedure specification
The controlled document defining all essential hardbanding variables, including alloy, process, preheat, interpass limits, travel speed, and post-weld treatment. Related article →
